AfD Leads Polls as SPD Falls to Fourth
Germany’s SPD drops to 12%, trailing the Greens, as AfD remains the leading political force with 29%.
Germany’s political landscape continues to shift as the Social Democratic Party (SPD) experiences a significant decline in voter support, according to the latest Insa Sunday poll conducted for ‘Bild’. The SPD has dropped to just 12%, losing one percentage point compared to the previous week. This marks the first time the party has fallen behind the Greens, who now stand at 13%.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) remains the strongest political force, maintaining its position with 29% support. The Union, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), follows with 22%, while the Left Party holds steady at 10%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Bavarian Party (BSW) would fail to enter the Bundestag, polling at 4% and 3%, respectively. Other parties collectively account for 7%.
The SPD’s decline is part of a broader trend of waning support for the governing coalition. Together, the CDU/CSU and SPD now command only 34% of voter support, a significant drop from their combined results in the 2025 federal election. At that time, the SPD had already recorded its worst-ever performance with 16.4%.
The poll results highlight the challenges facing the current government in securing a parliamentary majority. A coalition of the SPD, Greens, and the Left Party would only garner 35% of the vote, falling short of the required majority. A so-called ‘Kenya coalition’—comprising the Union, SPD, and Greens—would achieve a majority with 47%. However, a coalition between the Union and the AfD, which would command 51%, remains unlikely due to the Union’s firm stance against collaborating with the far-right party.
The survey, conducted between June 22 and June 26, included responses from 1,204 eligible voters. The margin of error is reported to be ±2.9 percentage points. These results underscore the growing political fragmentation in Germany and the challenges ahead for forming a stable government.
As the SPD continues to lose ground, questions arise about its ability to regain voter trust and its role in shaping Germany’s political future. Meanwhile, the AfD’s sustained lead signals a significant shift in voter sentiment, raising concerns about the direction of the country’s political discourse.
