Pension Increase Triggers Unexpected Tax Bills
A July pension hike brings joy but pushes 100,000 retirees into tax obligations for the first time.
Starting July 1, pensions in Germany rise by an average of 4.24%, offering financial relief to many retirees. However, this increase has an unintended consequence for approximately 100,000 pensioners: they now face mandatory tax declarations due to crossing the tax-free threshold. This development has left many affected individuals confused and concerned.
The tax-free threshold currently stands at €12,348 annually for single retirees and €24,696 for married couples filing jointly. According to tax advisor Bärbel Metzger, retirees often remain unaware of their tax obligations until contacted by the tax office. Metzger emphasizes that retirees must determine whether their taxable income exceeds the threshold, which can lead to unexpected tax bills.
Not all pension income is taxable. As Ronny Hübsch from the Social Association VdK Baden-Württemberg explains, only a portion of pension income is subject to taxation. For instance, in 2026, 84% of pension earnings will be taxable, increasing by 0.5% annually until 2058, when pensions will be fully taxed. Additionally, retirees can deduct expenses such as health insurance premiums, medical bills, and prescription costs, provided they exceed a reasonable burden threshold.
The introduction of the ‘Active Pension’ scheme offers new tax benefits for retirees who continue working. Starting in 2026, retirees can earn up to €2,000 per month tax-free from regular employment. However, income from mini-jobs remains exempt from taxation and does not need to be declared.
Experts advise retirees to carefully assess their financial situation following the pension increase. Those unsure about their tax obligations should consult a tax advisor, payroll assistance services, or the tax office for guidance. While the pension hike is a welcome change, understanding its tax implications is crucial to avoid surprises.
