Deutsche Bahn Rolls Out Bodycams Nationwide
Deutsche Bahn equips 2,000 long-distance staff with bodycams to enhance safety following a fatal attack in February.
Deutsche Bahn has announced the deployment of bodycams for approximately 2,000 employees working in long-distance services, including train attendants, onboard catering staff, and personnel in DB lounges. This initiative, which is voluntary for staff, aims to bolster safety measures and prevent violent incidents. The decision follows a tragic attack in February that claimed the life of a railway employee in regional service.
The bodycams, worn on uniforms, are designed to document incidents involving passenger aggression, serving both as a deterrent and a tool for evidence collection. Deutsche Bahn emphasized the preventive impact of these devices, stating that they contribute to a safer environment for both passengers and employees. Before using the cameras, staff will undergo comprehensive training to ensure proper handling and adherence to protocols.
Evelyn Palla, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, had previously pledged to expand the use of bodycams across all customer-facing roles by the end of the year. Until now, bodycams were only available to employees in regional services. This rollout is part of the company’s broader ‘Action Plan for More Safety on the Rails,’ which includes hiring 200 additional security personnel and enhancing the functionality of the emergency call button used by staff to discreetly alert the control center in dangerous situations.
The initiative reflects Deutsche Bahn’s commitment to addressing safety concerns in the wake of increasing reports of violence against railway employees. By equipping staff with bodycams, the company aims to foster a secure environment for its workforce and passengers alike. The cameras are expected to have a dual effect: deterring potential aggressors and providing critical evidence in the event of an incident.
Deutsche Bahn’s move aligns with a growing trend among transportation providers worldwide to adopt technology-driven solutions for safety. The company hopes the bodycams will not only protect its employees but also reassure passengers of their safety during travel. As the rollout progresses, Deutsche Bahn will monitor the effectiveness of the measure and explore further enhancements to its safety protocols.
