Heat Crisis: Dröge Slams Merz’s Inaction
Grünen leader Katharina Dröge accuses Chancellor Friedrich Merz of ignoring deadly heatwave impacts from his air-conditioned office.
Germany faced a deadly heatwave over the weekend, with Grünen parliamentary leader Katharina Dröge sharply criticizing Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his lack of response. Dröge highlighted the extraordinary efforts of healthcare and rescue workers who worked beyond their limits to mitigate the crisis. Despite their efforts, the heatwave likely claimed many lives, she stated.
Dröge accused Merz of being ‘impressively lacking in empathy’ and failing to act on the urgent need to protect vulnerable groups like the elderly and children from future heatwaves. She called for immediate action from the coalition government to address the growing threat of extreme temperatures, which she said are a direct consequence of the escalating climate crisis.
Speaking on ARD’s ‘Morgenmagazin,’ Dröge criticized Merz for ignoring the plight of healthcare workers and elderly residents suffering in facilities without air conditioning. ‘Friedrich Merz may be able to ignore the heat from his air-conditioned office, but those on the frontlines cannot,’ she said. Dröge emphasized the need for systemic changes to prepare for worsening heatwaves.
Dröge proposed a ‘Cooling Emergency Program’ to equip hospitals, care facilities, schools, and daycare centers with solar-powered air conditioning systems. She argued that Germany’s abundant summer solar energy could make such solutions both feasible and cost-effective. Additionally, she advocated for urban greening initiatives, including planting more trees and adding green facades to buildings, which she said could significantly lower city temperatures.
The Grünen leader warned that without immediate climate action, future summers would make current heatwaves seem mild in comparison. ‘We are already seeing record-breaking temperatures. If we don’t act now, in 20 years, these summers will feel cold,’ Dröge cautioned.
Dröge also criticized CDU politician Katherina Reiche’s proposed economic reforms, claiming they would hinder the expansion of renewable energy and exacerbate the climate crisis. She called for an immediate halt to these measures, which she described as ‘accelerants’ to global warming.
The heatwave has reignited debates over Germany’s climate policies, with Dröge urging the government to prioritize climate protection and adaptation measures. As extreme weather events become more frequent, the pressure on leaders to act decisively continues to mount.
