Police Strain Ahead of AfD Party Congress
Concerns mount over police readiness for protests at AfD congress in Erfurt as tensions escalate.
The German Police Union (GdP) has expressed serious concerns about potential shortages in police forces ahead of the AfD’s federal party congress in Erfurt, scheduled for July 4-5. With thousands of demonstrators expected, including up to 2,500 individuals deemed prone to violence, authorities fear an escalation of unrest. Protesters, including unions, left-wing groups, and environmental activists, view themselves as a critical barrier against the rise of far-right politics in Germany.
Jochen Kopelke, the GdP’s national chairman, warned that police resources might fall short due to competing demands across German states. While thousands of officers are being deployed to Erfurt, some regions may retain promised personnel for local emergencies, creating a ‘residual risk’ for event security. Kopelke highlighted the strain on police forces, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to increased demonstrations and prolonged shifts, resulting in higher sickness rates among officers.
The timing of the AfD congress has also sparked outrage among opponents, as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the NSDAP’s Reich Party Congress in Weimar. This historical parallel has intensified emotions, with many protesters viewing the date as a deliberate provocation. A city spokesperson confirmed that 30 protests have been registered, including a major demonstration near the congress venue organized by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) and other groups.
Kopelke emphasized the challenges posed by the scale of the protests, which could involve up to 50,000 participants. He noted that the readiness police, already stretched thin, faces mounting pressure due to the frequency and intensity of demonstrations in recent years. ’18-hour shifts are unsustainable and lead to long-term health issues,’ he said, underscoring the need for better resource allocation and support for law enforcement.
The AfD, a controversial far-right party, has faced widespread criticism for its policies and rhetoric, which many view as divisive and extremist. The upcoming congress in Erfurt is expected to draw significant attention, both from supporters and detractors, amplifying the need for robust security measures. As tensions rise, authorities are bracing for potential clashes, urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize peaceful protest.
