Ukraine Approves Controversial National Memorial Amid War
Ukraine’s parliament has approved a contentious national memorial to honor historical figures, sparking international debate.
Amid ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine’s parliament has approved the creation of a national memorial called the ‘Pantheon’ to honor prominent historical figures. The legislation passed with overwhelming support, as 287 lawmakers voted in favor during an expedited second reading. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who labeled the bill as ‘urgent,’ expressed gratitude to the parliament and called it a ‘significant step’ toward fostering national unity.
The memorial, to be established in Kyiv, will commemorate figures from the medieval Kievan Rus era to modern times, including controversial individuals regarded by Ukraine as independence fighters. It will also serve as a burial site for Ukrainian presidents. The decision has drawn criticism due to the inclusion of polarizing figures, which could strain relations with neighboring Poland. Zelenskyy emphasized the memorial’s role in shaping a ‘national and civic identity’ for future generations.
