Japan Quintuples Visa Fees to Combat Overtourism

Japan has raised visa fees for the first time in 48 years, aiming to address overtourism and its impact on locals.

In a significant move to tackle overtourism, Japan has increased its visa fees for foreign visitors by fivefold. The cost for a single-entry visa has risen from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen (approximately 80 euros), while multi-entry visas now cost 30,000 yen (around 160 euros), up from 6,000 yen. This marks the first adjustment in 48 years and targets visitors from over 120 countries, including China and the Philippines, which account for a large share of tourists.

The decision comes amid growing frustration among Japanese residents over the surge in tourism, which reached a record 42.7 million visitors last year. Popular destinations like Mount Fuji and Kyoto have faced overcrowding, with locals citing issues such as noise, littering, and rising costs in tourist hotspots. The government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, has also tripled the departure tax from 1,000 yen to 3,000 yen (16 euros) to fund infrastructure improvements in heavily visited areas. While German tourists are exempt from visa requirements, the changes reflect Japan’s broader efforts to balance tourism growth with preserving local quality of life.
