Investigators Link Ukrainian State Actors to Nord Stream Pipeline Attacks

German prosecutors allege Ukrainian state involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.

German federal prosecutors in Karlsruhe have revealed new details about the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, alleging that the attack was orchestrated by individuals acting on behalf of Ukrainian state authorities. According to the indictment, the operation aimed to permanently disrupt gas supplies through the pipelines, preventing Russia from using gas revenues to fund its war in Ukraine.

The investigation centers on Serhii K., a former Ukrainian military officer, who was arrested in Italy in 2025 and extradited to Germany. Prosecutors claim K. led a team of divers, a skipper, and a demolition expert in the operation. Using a rented yacht and high-performance explosives, the group allegedly planted timed charges on the pipelines near Denmark’s Bornholm island. The explosions caused significant damage to the pipelines, which were not operational at the time. K. faces charges of war crimes, destruction of infrastructure, and public endangerment.
