Pegah Edalatian Becomes First Secretary-General of Germany’s Green Party
Pegah Edalatian makes history as the first Secretary-General of the Green Party, aiming to diversify its leadership.
Pegah Edalatian has been elected as the first Secretary-General of Germany’s Green Party following a successful internal vote on constitutional amendments. Previously serving as the party’s political manager, Edalatian’s new role reflects a shift in responsibilities that align more closely with the title. Born in Kassel in 1980 to a family of Iranian descent, she studied social sciences and international relations in Düsseldorf before working in development cooperation. Joining the Greens at age 31, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming known for her work in refugee policy and global development within the party.
Edalatian identifies with the party’s left wing but rejects dogmatism, positioning herself as a pragmatic leader who collaborates effectively across ideological divides. Her focus is on diversifying the party, including bringing more non-academics into leadership roles. Despite setbacks like election losses in 2024, Edalatian has maintained her influence, recently ascending to the role of Secretary-General. While her future plans remain unclear, her historic appointment marks a significant milestone for the Greens.
