Germany Tightens Sick Leave Rules: Major Reforms Announced
Germany’s coalition government introduces stricter sick leave regulations, sparking debate among workers and employers.
Germany’s CDU, CSU, and SPD coalition has agreed on sweeping reforms, including stricter rules for sick leave. Starting soon, employees must present a doctor’s certificate on the first day of illness, replacing the current rule requiring it from the fourth day. The move aims to curb absenteeism but has drawn criticism from workers’ representatives.
Additionally, the coalition plans to abolish telephone-based sick leave certifications, a practice introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce infections. Employers will still have the option to negotiate exceptions through individual or collective agreements. Critics, including medical professionals, argue that these measures could increase pressure on sick employees and strain healthcare systems.
