50 Years Since the Entebbe Operation: A Pivotal Moment in History
Israel’s daring rescue mission in Entebbe transformed global responses to hijackings.
Fifty years ago, Israeli special forces executed a bold rescue operation in Entebbe, Uganda, freeing over 100 hostages from a hijacked Air France flight. This mission, known as Operation Thunderbolt, not only marked a significant moment in Israeli history but also reshaped international approaches to hostage situations.
The operation involved a meticulously planned deception using a black Mercedes to disguise the Israeli commandos as a convoy of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Despite initial setbacks, the mission resulted in the deaths of all seven hijackers and the rescue of 102 hostages, although three hostages lost their lives. The operation’s success underscored a shift from negotiation to intervention in crisis situations, influencing future responses to terrorism.
