Survey Reveals One in Five Germans Would Leave Country if AfD Gains Power
A recent survey indicates that over 20% of Germans would consider leaving the country if the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party were to assume power at the federal level, highlighting significant public concern ahead of the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt.
A new representative survey conducted by Insa for ‘Bild am Sonntag’ reveals that 22% of respondents would contemplate leaving Germany should the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party gain power at the federal level. This sentiment reflects widespread apprehension regarding the potential implications of an AfD-led government, particularly as the party approaches a possible absolute majority in the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6. The survey, which involved 1,001 participants and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, also found that 47% of respondents believe that Germany would suffer damage under an AfD government, while 36% disagreed with this assessment. Additionally, 18% of those surveyed remained undecided or did not provide a response. In light of the looming elections, the survey explored public opinion on potential coalition formations. A significant 43% of respondents expressed the view that a coalition of all other parties against the AfD would inadvertently strengthen the party, while 32% disagreed. When asked about preferences for governance, 33% indicated they would favor a coalition of all other parties over an AfD majority, whereas 52% rejected this notion. The AfD has faced scrutiny, with several of its state branches classified as securely extremist by authorities. The party is currently contesting its classification as a far-right entity, with a decision pending in the main proceedings. Despite leading in recent polls, no other parliamentary parties are willing to form a coalition with the AfD as the next federal election is scheduled for spring 2029.
