Forgotten Pioneers: The 1939 Road Trip from Geneva to Kabul
In 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, Ella Maillart and Annemarie Schwarzenbach embarked on an extraordinary 10,000-kilometer journey from Geneva to Kabul in a Ford V8 roadster, driven by adventure and the hope of helping a friend overcome personal demons.
In the summer of 1939, as tensions escalated in Europe, two pioneering women, Ella Maillart and Annemarie Schwarzenbach, set off on an audacious road trip from Geneva to Kabul in a Ford V8 roadster. This journey, spanning 10,000 kilometers, was not only a quest for adventure but also an attempt to help Schwarzenbach, a journalist and author struggling with heroin addiction, escape her demons. Maillart, a Swiss native with a history of travel, met Schwarzenbach shortly before their departure. The two women, equipped with minimal supplies including spare parts, tires, a typewriter, and five cameras, traversed Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia without any assistance. Their route took them through Turkey and Iran, ultimately leading to Afghanistan, where they arrived three months later. The journey was fraught with challenges, including treacherous mountain roads and mechanical failures. Despite these obstacles, the duo persevered, capturing their experiences for publication in various newspapers and magazines eager for tales of such daring exploits. Along the way, they visited the iconic Buddhas of Bamiyan, which would later be destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. However, upon reaching Kabul, the relationship between Maillart and Schwarzenbach began to deteriorate as the latter struggled with her addiction. With the outbreak of war in Europe, Schwarzenbach returned to Switzerland, while Maillart continued her journey alone, eventually reaching India, where she lived until 1945. Tragically, the two friends never reunited, as Schwarzenbach died in a cycling accident in 1942. Maillart passed away in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and resilience.
