Spain and Portugal Collaborate on Military Vehicle Acquisition with EU Funding
Spain and Portugal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly procure tactical military vehicles, enhancing defense cooperation under the European SAFE initiative.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense announced a collaborative agreement with Portugal to purchase high-mobility tactical military vehicles, known as VAMTAC, with a payload capacity of 1,500 kilograms. This Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles and her Portuguese counterpart Nuno Melo at the Fortaleza de San Juan Bautista in Porto, aims to bolster military cooperation and promote the European defense industry. The acquisition will be financed through the European Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, designed to expedite member states’ investments in critical defense capabilities. Robles emphasized that this initiative not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reinforces the collective security framework of the European Union. The agreement establishes a robust cooperation framework between the two nations’ defense ministries, aiming for enhanced tactical mobility and interoperability of their armed forces.
