German Chemical Industry Shows First Signs of Growth Amid Geopolitical and Energy Challenges

Germany’s chemical sector is experiencing renewed optimism for the first time in years, driven by unique geopolitical factors despite high energy costs.

Germany’s chemical industry, a key pillar of the nation’s economy alongside automotive and machinery sectors, has shown its first positive business outlook in four years. Fresh data from the Munich-based ifo Institute reveals a sharp rebound in business sentiment, with the industry’s indicator jumping from -14.6 points in July to +11.6 points. The overall climate index, which combines current business conditions with future expectations, improved significantly, narrowing from -26.3 points to -2.4 points.

The sector contributes nearly €230 billion annually and employs over 545,000 workers across 2,100 facilities. Major players such as BASF, Bayer, and Covestro are driving Germany’s global presence in chemical exports, which reached €71.6 billion in the first half of 2026, a 1.4% increase compared to the previous year. While the sector is facing rising energy prices—with electricity up by 19.7% and natural gas by 18.8% compared to July 2025—recent geopolitical disruptions have unexpectedly strengthened demand for German-produced chemicals.

A crisis in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has curbed exports from Asia, creating a temporary surge in demand for German chemical products. Industry experts project the continuation of this unusual market boost as geopolitical tensions remain unresolved. Nonetheless, soaring energy costs and challenging production conditions present lingering concerns, leaving questions about the sustainability of Germany’s chemical sector rebound in the longer term.
