Migrants Shut Down Businesses in Magdeburg to Protest Racism and Political Fear

Hundreds of businesses in Magdeburg closed their doors on Wednesday as part of a strike organized by migrant communities to oppose racism and express concerns over potential political shifts in Saxony-Anhalt.

Migrant entrepreneurs in Magdeburg initiated a large-scale strike on Wednesday, temporarily shutting down shops, restaurants, and markets in protest against what they see as growing racism and fears of heightened anti-immigrant policies. More than 160 businesses participated, with bright red posters placed in shop windows to declare the strike’s message — a call to resist discrimination and preserve democratic rights. The action coincided with rising political tensions ahead of upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

The strike drew attention to the deep concerns migrant communities feel about the political climate. Many fear an increased normalization of anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies that could lead to mass deportations. While some businesses cited lease agreements preventing closures, others actively joined the protest, making their voices heard on the importance of diversity and inclusion in society. A kebab shop owner, originally from Turkey, emphasized that without migrants’ contributions, local economic life would struggle to function.

The event culminated in a demonstration near the state parliament, where over 220 people gathered. Protesters expressed their growing unease with societal divisions, recalling a time when communities were more united. Advocacy groups highlighted how incidents, such as a past attack on a local Christmas market, have worsened the environment for migrants. Organizers vowed to continue standing against xenophobia, urging society to reject calls for mass expulsions and protect social cohesion.
