Apple Farmers Tackle Heatwaves and Drought with Innovation
Apple farmers in southern Germany are grappling with rising heat and extended droughts, turning to innovative measures like hail nets and emergency irrigation systems to protect their crops.
In southern Germany, apple growers are facing dual challenges from extreme weather conditions and pressure from cheaper imports. Farms, like the one operated by Albrecht Rembold near Heilbronn, are adapting with creative solutions. Hail nets—once used only for storm protection—are now essential equipment, shielding apples from intense sunlight that can cause heat damage.
Water scarcity has added another layer of difficulty. Prolonged dry spells have resulted in significant crop losses, with some trees shedding fruit prematurely. To combat this, Rembold and his family have implemented emergency drip irrigation, physically transporting water to the trees using portable tanks. Despite these efforts, the yield per tree has dropped by up to three kilograms, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management.
Experts emphasize that long-term solutions, such as on-site water storage reservoirs, are critical for the future of apple farming in the region. However, the high costs and regulatory hurdles for building such systems remain a challenge for farmers. With climate change altering weather patterns and intensifying risks, investments in water infrastructure are seen as vital to keep the industry viable in the years ahead.
