Thousands Rally in Stockholm Calling for Bold Climate Action
Around 10,000 people marched in Stockholm demanding stronger environmental policies ahead of Sweden’s upcoming parliamentary elections, with activist Greta Thunberg joining the call for urgent change.
In a large-scale demonstration on Sunday, thousands of protesters filled the streets of Stockholm, urging Sweden’s government to adopt more stringent climate policies. With less than three weeks until the parliamentary elections, participants pushed for environmental issues to take center stage as voter priorities. Climate activist Greta Thunberg, addressing the gathering, criticized all political parties for failing to propose measures aligned with scientific recommendations, warning of looming environmental collapse if substantial action isn’t taken.
The protest, which began at 1:00 PM, saw the participation of over 200 organizations, including environmental groups, youth associations, religious institutions, and trade unions. Demonstrators marched through the city in a show of unity, highlighting widespread concerns over the government’s approach to climate goals. Some expressed optimism over the turnout, with 21-year-old student Kliff Lindberg noting that the large number of attendees gave him hope and motivation to continue advocating for change.
Recent polls have revealed that more than a third of Swedish voters consider environmental protection the top issue in the upcoming election. Criticism has mounted over the government’s track record, including reduced fuel taxes and relaxed regulations for alternative fuel providers, actions perceived as contrary to Sweden’s climate targets. While the country aims to achieve a 70% reduction in traffic emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2045, activists argue that current policies fall short of delivering on these key objectives.
