EU Vows Stronger Action Against Russia Amid Ukraine Independence Day Observance

The European Union has pledged ongoing support to Ukraine and increased sanctions against Russia until hostilities cease. This comes as Ukraine marks its Independence Day under the shadow of war.

European Council President António Costa announced during Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations that the EU will continue its unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Costa emphasized that the Union would apply additional sanctions on Russia, aiming to pressure its leadership into halting the conflict and engaging in peace negotiations. The EU has already mobilized over 220 billion euros to assist Ukraine through the past four and a half years of war.

Addressing the economic toll on Russia, Costa asserted that the sustained sanctions are eroding Moscow’s resources and demonstrating tangible effects. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s long-term stability and security by supporting its bid for membership in the Union, calling it essential for democratic stability across Europe. Current EU funding initiatives, including a 90 billion euro aid package, focus on preparing for the upcoming winter, enhancing drone capabilities, and bolstering air defense systems.

Ukraine’s Independence Day, commemorating its 1991 break from the Soviet Union, takes place amidst challenges posed by Russia’s ongoing invasion, which began in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed international leaders to Kyiv for the 35th anniversary of independence, while cooperative efforts under the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ were also discussed during virtual sessions. Meanwhile, reports have emerged from Russia regarding casualties caused by Ukrainian drone strikes, highlighting the escalating nature of hostilities on both sides.
