Foreign Minister Visits Ukraine Ahead of Independence Anniversary Amid Rising Tensions

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made an unannounced visit to Ukraine just days before the country marks 35 years of independence, condemning escalating Russian attacks and reaffirming Germany’s support.

Johann Wadephul, Germany’s foreign minister, arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced trip as Ukraine prepares to celebrate its 35th Independence Day. Speaking shortly after his arrival by special train, Wadephul condemned recent intensified Russian drone and missile strikes, accusing Moscow of indiscriminately targeting civilians and vital infrastructure. Promising continued support, he declared, ‘Ukraine will prevail in this conflict.’

Wadephul highlighted the deadly toll of Russia’s ongoing aggression, noting July and August were the bloodiest months for Ukrainian civilians in more than four years. He accused Russia of attempting to break Ukraine’s resilience by destroying critical infrastructure and questioned the sustainability of Moscow’s strategy, suggesting it revealed mounting weaknesses within Vladimir Putin’s regime. The escalation of attacks, coupled with increasingly oppressive propaganda and internal suppression, he argued, underscores Russia’s desperation.

The minister’s visit marks his fourth trip to Ukraine since taking office 16 months ago, demonstrating Germany’s steadfast backing for Kyiv. Discussions with Ukrainian leaders will center on enhancing security cooperation and securing vital resources during the upcoming winter months. With independence celebrations planned next week, Wadephul reiterated that Germany remains committed to helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty and work toward peace.
