Comprehensive Policy Paper on Nihilistic Violent Extremism and School-Linked Attacks in Italy 2026

    Strategic Policy Paper

In the spring of 2026, Italy witnessed an unusual sequence of school attacks and investigations into alleged plans targeting schools, all involving minors aged 12 to 17. Drawing upon official statements, specialist literature, and open-source reporting, this policy paper examines four cases across different regions of the country between March and May 2026, alongside an important precursor from February 2025. These diverse episodes fit into the broader framework of nihilistic violent extremism (NVE), the True Crime Community (TCC), and adjacent subcultures of performative violence. The paper argues that these cases should not be understood as conventional ideological terrorism or mere adolescent deviance but rather as Italy’s first publicly visible sequence of NVE-linked incidents. Three of the four 2026 episodes indicate a domestic mimetic chain unfolding within weeks, requiring Italy to confront the complex challenges these phenomena pose for counterterrorism, while underscoring the need for a robust prevention framework.

Within 65 days during spring 2026, two violent incidents within Italian schools forced the country to address a type of threat it was not yet prepared to recognize—nihilistic violent extremism (NVE) and related online subcultures of performative violence. On March 25, 2026, a 13-year-old student in Trescore Balneario (northern Italy) stabbed his French language teacher in a school corridor while livestreaming the attack on Telegram after publishing a pre-attack text titled “The Final Solution” containing NVE-related references. Then, on May 29, a 12-year-old student in San Vito Lo Capo (southern Italy) attempted to stab his technology teacher in the classroom, wearing a bicycle helmet covered with handwritten references to the True Crime Community (TCC) and recording the act with the intention of livestreaming it.

Moreover, in the brief interval between these two school attacks, Italian authorities launched two separate police operations targeting minors with extremist views allegedly interested in planning school-related acts of violence. On March 30, the Carabinieri (Italy’s national gendarmerie) arrested a 17-year-old student in Perugia province (central Italy) who was reportedly fascinated by incel subcultures, neo-Nazism, and school shooting fantasies and accused of planning a Columbine-inspired massacre at his high school after acquiring weapons-manufacturing instructions. On April 4, the Italian State Police (Polizia di Stato) searched a 15-year-old student with white supremacist sympathies in Arezzo province (central Italy) who had reportedly expressed admiration online for the perpetrator of the Trescore Balneario school attack and reportedly displayed interest in carrying out an analogous act within days.
