Berlin Government Grapples with Major Cyberattack, Recovery Efforts Ongoing
A large-scale cyberattack has disrupted Berlin’s government network, leaving key departments offline and recovery efforts expected to take several more days.
Berlin’s government is facing significant operational challenges following a major cyberattack on its IT infrastructure. Two key departments, responsible for construction and transportation, remain disconnected from the city’s network as authorities work to restore functionality. Mayor Kai Wegner described the attack as severe and emphasized its seriousness during a press conference, though he confirmed that no sensitive data appears to have been compromised.
Efforts to determine the cause of the breach are currently on hold as officials prioritize immediate crisis management. External support from a U.S.-based cybersecurity firm has been enlisted to assist in recovery operations. The attack, which occurred last Friday, also impacted some public services, including the online application system for absentee voting. While this service has since been restored, the broader network remains under strain due to extensive security analyses being conducted.
Experts have criticized Berlin’s cybersecurity preparedness, with IT specialist Manuel Atug calling the city’s defenses inadequate. He noted that previous recommendations to bolster security had not been implemented. Despite the disruption, officials have assured the public that IT systems critical to the upcoming Berlin election remain unaffected by the attack.
