A church-affiliated organization has terminated an employee after her candidacy for a far-right political party, citing conflicts with its core values and mission.

A diaconal organization in Germany has dismissed Martina Müller, an employee of 15 years, following her decision to run as a candidate for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in local elections. The organization, Mission:Lebenshaus gGmbH, stated that the move was necessary to uphold the credibility of its church-based mission and values.

The organization clarified that the dismissal was not based solely on Müller’s party affiliation but on the public positions and activities associated with her candidacy. It emphasized that employees are expected to align with the principles of the Evangelical Church in Germany, which include treating all individuals with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or beliefs. The AfD has been classified as a right-wing extremist group by state authorities, creating what the organization described as a ‘severe conflict’ with its mission.

Müller, who announced her termination on social media, revealed that she had previously received a warning and was asked to withdraw her candidacy in writing. She has vowed to pursue legal action against the decision. The organization reiterated its commitment to political neutrality but stressed its obligation to act decisively when its values are at risk of being undermined. It stated that the decision was made after careful consideration of constitutional, church, and labor law principles.
