Germany Pledges Support for Ukraine’s Green Reconstruction and Chernobyl Repairs
Germany’s Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has committed to aiding Ukraine in rebuilding its infrastructure and repairing the damaged protective shield at the Chernobyl nuclear site during his visit to Kyiv.
German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has announced significant support for Ukraine during his multi-day visit to Kyiv. Among the key initiatives is Germany’s commitment to assist in repairing the protective shield over the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, which was damaged in a drone attack in early 2025. Experts have warned that the shield’s ability to contain radiation has been compromised, and the estimated repair costs are around €500 million.
Schneider emphasized the complexity of the repair process, calling for international collaboration to expedite the efforts. Discussions among G7 nations are already underway, with plans for co-financing involving the European Union. Beyond addressing nuclear safety, Schneider reaffirmed Germany’s backing of Ukraine’s bid for EU membership, highlighting the importance of aligning Ukrainian environmental laws with EU standards.
The visit also focused on rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by the ongoing conflict with Russia. Schneider was accompanied by a delegation of green technology entrepreneurs exploring investment opportunities in Ukraine. The group aims to develop projects in renewable energy, recycling, and environmental technology, which Schneider described as mutually beneficial. He stressed that modern infrastructure would bolster Ukraine’s resilience while creating a promising market for German companies. Meetings with Ukrainian officials and civil society representatives are set to explore strategies for enhancing energy efficiency and security under wartime conditions.
