CDU Candidate Calls for Party Reform Amid Rising Public Discontent

Bernd Siggelkow, a CDU candidate in Berlin, has openly criticized his party’s approach to key issues, urging greater self-reflection and a stronger focus on social concerns ahead of the upcoming election.

Bernd Siggelkow, a candidate for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Berlin’s Marzahn-Mitte district, has expressed sharp criticism of his own party, highlighting growing dissatisfaction among voters. Siggelkow, who is also the founder of the children’s charity Arche, emphasized the need for the CDU to acknowledge its mistakes and adopt a more socially conscious approach to politics.

Speaking about the challenges facing Berlin, Siggelkow pointed to rising insecurity and unease among residents, particularly in areas affected by demographic changes since 2015. He noted that the influx of refugees had altered the city’s landscape, leading to tensions over housing availability and other resources. While he stressed that these issues should not be framed in a discriminatory manner, he called for more direct and transparent discussions to address public concerns.

Siggelkow also criticized CDU leadership at the national level, singling out Chancellor Friedrich Merz for alienating voters with dismissive rhetoric. He argued that the party needs to reconnect with its social roots and prioritize the needs of ordinary citizens. With the Berlin state election scheduled for September 20, Siggelkow’s remarks underscore the urgency for the CDU to rebuild trust and present a clear vision for the future.
