Thuringia Leadership Faces Tensions Over Coalition Decision

Thuringia’s political leadership is grappling with internal party disputes as calls to exit the coalition with SPD and CDU intensify, sparking debates over stability and governance.

Katja Wolf, Thuringia’s Finance Minister and state chair of the BSW party, has announced that discussions will take place regarding the party’s national leadership’s demand to withdraw from the coalition with SPD and CDU. Wolf emphasized the importance of stability during economic and social crises, stating that any decision would prioritize the interests of Thuringia and its citizens.

Stefan Wogawa, parliamentary secretary for the BSW faction in Thuringia, dismissed the national leadership’s directive as irrelevant, asserting that individual lawmakers are not bound by such orders. He confirmed that a faction meeting is scheduled for Monday to deliberate on the matter, signaling resistance to the federal party’s stance.

Meanwhile, Fabio De Masi, the national chair of BSW, reiterated the call for the Thuringian faction to align with the party’s broader goals, warning of potential consequences if the directive is ignored. The dispute highlights growing divisions within the party, with Wolf advocating for regional priorities and unity amidst differing political perspectives.
