Berlin’s Russian Cultural Center Sparks Controversy Amid Election Campaign

The Russian House in Berlin faces scrutiny as allegations arise regarding its potential use for espionage. The SPD calls for its closure, while the BSW advocates for its preservation amidst a heated election race.

As Berlin prepares for its upcoming parliamentary elections on September 20, the Russian House has emerged as a contentious issue. Allegations suggest that the cultural institution, located prominently on Friedrichstraße, may be misused for espionage activities by Moscow. This has prompted the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to demand its closure, while the BSW defends its continued operation.

SPD candidate Steffen Krach recently drew national attention by staging a protest outside the Russian House, holding a sign that provocatively suggested the possibility of expropriation. However, he later clarified that he was merely advocating for a review of the institution’s status if cultural exchanges continue to falter. This statement follows media reports alleging that the Russian House is being utilized for secretive purposes.

The Russian House, established in 1984 during the East German era, is fully controlled by Russia and offers various cultural programs, including language courses and film screenings. Its operations are governed by two international agreements between Germany and Russia, which do not permit espionage. Despite calls for its closure, legal experts indicate that terminating the agreements is complicated, with the 2013 contract lasting 99 years and regular cancellation not possible until a year before its expiration.
