Merz Urges Vigilance in Protecting Freedom and Democracy on Mauerbau Anniversary
On the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s construction, Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the ongoing need to defend freedom and democracy, reflecting on the lessons of history during a commemorative event in Berlin.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz marked the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s construction by calling for a renewed commitment to safeguarding freedom and democracy. In a message shared on social media, Merz reminded the public that the lessons of the past remain relevant today, stating, ‘Freedom and democracy are not a given; we must always fight for them.’ His remarks came during a central memorial event held at Bernauer Straße in Berlin, attended by approximately 120 guests from various sectors including politics, culture, and society.
During the ceremony, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner highlighted the lingering divisions between East and West Germany, noting that the impact of the Wall continues to shape political discourse. Klöckner emphasized the importance of understanding differing perspectives, particularly regarding contemporary issues such as COVID-19 measures and migration. She urged listeners to approach these discussions with an open mind, stressing that the courage that led to the Wall’s fall in 1989 is still needed today to bridge divides.
Cultural State Minister Wolfram Weimer raised concerns about the trivialization of the former East German regime, warning against narratives that romanticize the past. He pointed to political movements that may distort the reality of life in the German Democratic Republic. Weimer advocated for a proactive approach to memory culture, suggesting that streets and public spaces be named after resistance fighters from the DDR to honor their legacy and ensure that the lessons of history are not forgotten.
