Astronomical Event: Solar Eclipse Captivates Germany Amid Perfect Viewing Conditions
Tonight, a solar eclipse will be visible across much of Germany, with optimal weather conditions reported by meteorologists. As excitement builds, many are lining up for special viewing glasses to witness the celestial phenomenon.
According to the German Weather Service, the solar eclipse is expected to provide excellent visibility in various regions of the country this evening. Enthusiastic crowds are forming at stores selling specialized glasses, ensuring they can safely view the event without damaging their eyes.
Following the eclipse, stargazers can look forward to another astronomical highlight: the Perseid meteor shower. The event, titled ‘Wish Upon a Star – The Perseid Space Night,’ will be streamed live on the ARD Twitch channel starting at 11 PM. Hosts Sophia Sailer and Stefan Geier will engage with the community and feature special guests, including astro-influencer Tim Vollert and science communicator Sina Kürtz, to discuss the night sky and answer viewer questions.
Uwe Gradwohl, head of the SWR science editorial team, has climbed a hill in Heilbronn for a prime view of the eclipse. He advises viewers to look towards the west-northwest for the best sighting just before sunset. Gradwohl notes that the light will noticeably change during the eclipse, with temperatures potentially dropping as the moon covers up to 90% of the sun. Meanwhile, power grid operators in Germany have assured that the eclipse will not impact electricity supply, although solar energy production may decrease slightly earlier than usual.
