Transport Minister Advocates River Expansion Amid Low Water Levels

Germany’s Transport Minister Steffen Bilger is pushing for the expansion of rivers to address critically low water levels affecting inland shipping. Discussions with state leaders are set to explore further measures to mitigate supply chain disruptions.

With many rivers in Germany experiencing historically low water levels, Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has called for urgent expansion efforts. He emphasized the importance of supporting waterways, which he described as the most environmentally friendly mode of transport. Bilger’s remarks come as he prepares to meet with state leaders to discuss strategies for addressing the ongoing crisis in inland shipping.

The current drought has severely impacted major rivers, including the Rhine, where record low levels have been recorded. This situation poses significant challenges for the shipping industry, as vessels are unable to carry full loads or, in some cases, operate at all. Bilger noted that confidence in inland shipping hinges on resolving these low water issues, advocating for infrastructure improvements to ensure long-term reliability.

While Bilger reassured that supply chains remain stable for now, he acknowledged the potential for disruptions if conditions do not improve. He highlighted the need to shift more freight from waterways to rail and road transport to mitigate risks. The construction industry, however, has already reported anticipated shortages of building materials, signaling that the effects of low water levels could soon be felt more broadly across various sectors.
