EU Lawmakers Urge Comprehensive Action to Combat Cardiovascular Diseases
Members of the European Parliament’s Public Health Committee have called for a robust strategy to tackle cardiovascular diseases, which claim 1.7 million lives annually in Europe. Their recommendations include stricter regulations on tobacco, improved nutrition labeling, and enhanced access to healthcare.
In a significant move to address the pressing issue of cardiovascular health, the Public Health Committee of the European Parliament has adopted a report urging the European Union to implement a comprehensive plan aimed at preventing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This initiative comes in response to the EU’s inaugural cardiovascular health strategy, known as the ‘Safe Hearts Plan.’ The report emphasizes the need to address key risk factors such as smoking, unhealthy diets, and excessive alcohol consumption.
The committee advocates for stringent regulations to limit the accessibility and appeal of tobacco products, including emerging nicotine devices. It also calls for educational campaigns to raise awareness about the health risks associated with harmful alcohol consumption. Furthermore, the report encourages the promotion of balanced diets, such as the Mediterranean and Nordic diets, alongside improved front-of-pack nutrition labeling to help consumers make informed choices.
In addition to prevention, the report highlights the importance of early detection and affordable treatment for those at risk of CVDs. Lawmakers are pushing for regular cardiovascular health checks, particularly for individuals with known risk factors. They also stress the need for equitable access to high-quality healthcare services, regardless of socio-economic status. To enhance public safety, the report advocates for widespread cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in schools and workplaces, aiming to empower citizens to respond effectively in emergencies.
