EU Strengthens Worker Safety Standards Against Hazardous Chemicals

European Parliament and Council negotiators have reached a provisional agreement to enhance worker protections against dangerous chemicals, aiming to prevent thousands of illnesses over the next four decades.

In a significant move to safeguard worker health, negotiators from the European Parliament and Council have finalized a provisional agreement on new regulations targeting exposure to hazardous substances. This agreement marks the sixth revision of the carcinogens, mutagens, and reprotoxic substances directive, introducing updated exposure limits for various chemicals prevalent in industries such as battery production, steel manufacturing, and textiles.

The new regulations establish stricter limit values for substances like cobalt, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and isoprene, which have been linked to serious health risks, including lung cancer. The Parliament’s insistence on assessing welding fumes further underscores the commitment to comprehensive worker safety. The agreement also emphasizes the necessity for clearer guidelines regarding personal protective equipment, ensuring that workers have access to essential safety gear and regular breaks in uncontaminated areas.

Additionally, the provisional agreement highlights the need for specialized training for healthcare workers handling hazardous medicinal products and mandates enhanced protective measures for emergency responders. With an estimated 120,000 occupational cancer diagnoses annually in the EU, this initiative aims to significantly reduce health risks and improve workplace safety, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that will receive support to comply with the new standards.
