European Parliament Leaders Gear Up for Ireland’s EU Presidency
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and key political figures are in Dublin to strategize for Ireland’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, set to begin on July 1.
The visit, scheduled for June 23, includes meetings with prominent Irish officials, such as President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The discussions aim to align on priorities for Ireland’s presidency, focusing on competitiveness, the One Europe, One Market initiative, and the EU’s long-term budget.
As Ireland prepares to take the helm of the Council of the EU, Metsola emphasized the significance of this moment for Europe, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to enhance security and uphold EU values. The Conference of Presidents, which includes Metsola and leaders from various political groups, traditionally visits the incoming presidency country to ensure a unified approach to upcoming challenges.
Following their meetings, Metsola and Martin will hold a press conference at 18:10 IST, which will be broadcast live. Media representatives wishing to attend must register in advance through the Irish presidency’s accreditation platform. Ireland will lead the Council of the EU from July to December 2026, with Lithuania set to follow in January 2027.
