Sex Work Emerges as a Survival Strategy for Women in Ukraine’s War Zones

In the wake of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, many women, including 22-year-old Ljudmyla, have turned to sex work as a means of survival, catering primarily to soldiers in frontline areas. This trend highlights the complex interplay of economic necessity and the psychological toll of war on both sex workers and military personnel.

Ljudmyla began offering sexual services in May 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion, when job opportunities were scarce. At just 18 years old, she struggled to find work as a barista, leading her to enter the sex industry, where she now primarily serves soldiers in cities like Isjum. She reports that many of her clients seek not only physical intimacy but also emotional connection, often sharing their traumatic experiences from the battlefield.

The financial rewards for sex workers in these areas are significant, with soldiers paying around 6,000 Hryvnias (approximately 120 Euros) for an hour of service. Ljudmyla notes that her clients frequently express their fears and frustrations about the war, revealing a deep need for companionship and understanding amidst the chaos. This dynamic underscores the psychological burden faced by soldiers, who often feel isolated and overwhelmed by their experiences.

However, the situation is fraught with danger, as highlighted by Olena Makaja, director of the Positive Women organization. She warns that many sex workers are vulnerable to violence from military personnel, a grim reality exacerbated by the stress and trauma of war. The organization provides essential support, including medical care and psychological assistance, to help these women navigate the challenges they face in such a perilous environment.
