Russia Seeks Clarity on Trump’s Stance After G-7 Remarks
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for clarification from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his position on the Ukraine conflict, following comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron at the recent G-7 summit in Évian.
Lavrov’s demand for clarity stems from Macron’s assertion that Trump acknowledged Russia’s lack of interest in achieving peace in Ukraine, indicating a potential shift in U.S. policy. This revelation has raised concerns in Moscow about whether Trump’s stance has indeed changed, particularly after he previously called for peace negotiations with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Russian Foreign Minister expressed confusion over the implications of the Évian summit, noting that the U.S. has not communicated its conclusions from the meeting. Macron’s comments suggested that previous agreements made between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage last August have been effectively nullified, which included a proposed withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbass region in exchange for a freeze on Russian military positions.
Lavrov hinted that the Anchorage discussions may have been a strategic maneuver by the U.S. to buy time for Ukraine’s rearmament, as Washington now appears to be demanding further concessions. Despite these tensions, Russia remains open to dialogue, anticipating visits from U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Lavrov also criticized ongoing U.S. sanctions, the absence of direct flight connections, and the continuous flow of American arms to European nations supporting Ukraine.
