Spanish PM Urges EU Meeting Amid Ceuta Border Crisis
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for an urgent meeting of EU interior ministers following a mass border crossing into Ceuta, which he described as a result of ‘selfish’ responses from member states.
Over 50,000 individuals crossed into Ceuta from Morocco on Thursday and Friday, resulting in at least 67 fatalities. While more than 48,000 have reportedly returned to Morocco, the situation has sparked a political crisis in Spain, with some EU nations suggesting Spain’s suspension from the Schengen zone. Sánchez emphasized that nearly all who crossed have been returned, averting further movement into continental Europe. Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, noted that several thousand individuals remain in the city, creating ongoing unease. The crisis has highlighted divisions within the EU regarding external border policies, with Italy announcing a temporary suspension of its Schengen arrangements with Spain. Sánchez’s call for a meeting aims to address these challenges and restore EU unity on migration issues.
