Migrants Return to Morocco from Ceuta Amid Hostility and Hunger

A significant number of migrants who recently breached Spain’s Ceuta enclave are returning to Morocco, citing hunger, exhaustion, and local hostility as primary reasons for their departure.

Following a mass influx of over 50,000 migrants into Ceuta, many are now returning to Morocco, disillusioned by their experiences. Reports indicate that migrants faced severe food shortages and hostility from locals, with many describing Ceuta as a ‘prison’ due to closed shops and limited resources. Spain’s Interior Ministry confirmed that approximately 48,300 individuals have returned to Morocco. In response to the crisis, Spain is constructing a 500-meter floating barrier to enhance border security. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the reactions of some EU leaders, emphasizing the need for a coordinated response to prevent further mass crossings. Amidst these developments, the future remains uncertain for those migrants who choose to stay, with some expressing a determination to remain in Spain despite the challenges they face.
