NATO Considers Nuclear Expansion in Eastern Europe Amidst Russian Threats

NATO is evaluating the deployment of additional American nuclear capabilities in Europe, with Poland, Finland, and Lithuania as potential host nations.

In response to perceived threats from Russia, NATO is exploring the positioning of U.S. nuclear assets in Eastern Europe, as reported by Süddeutschen Zeitung. Poland is seeking to join the Nuclear Sharing program, while Finland is reconsidering its ban on nuclear weapon transit and import. Lithuania’s parliament is also reviewing legislation to lift its constitutional prohibition on nuclear deployments. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed ongoing discussions regarding the alliance’s nuclear posture, although specifics remain undisclosed. U.S. nuclear expert Robert Peters suggested a potential increase of 100 to 150 non-strategic nuclear munitions in Europe within the next two years, necessitating new storage facilities. Conversely, former NATO nuclear policy director Jim Stokes argued that existing military capabilities suffice from Western European bases. Meanwhile, Norway has joined France’s nuclear deterrence framework, citing Russian military rearmament as a key factor.
