Germany Allocates €1.7 Billion for Digital Train Technology Enhancement
The German Federal Ministry of Transport has announced a funding initiative of approximately €1.7 billion to equip trains with the European Train Control System (ETCS) by 2030.
This investment aims to facilitate the digitalization of rail infrastructure, enhancing train spacing and increasing capacity on various routes by eliminating the need for optical signal systems. Additionally, the ministry will provide around €482 million for vehicle equipment in the Digital Node Stuttgart (DKS). The funding guidelines include support rates of up to 60% for serial equipment and up to 90% for first-of-class vehicle variants, addressing a critical barrier in the digitalization process. Applications for funding can be submitted to the Federal Office for Administrative Services.
