Saxony Government Defends Religious Education Amid Church Crisis
Saxony’s Minister of Education, Clemens, asserts the importance of religious education, distinguishing it from neutral ethics classes.
In a recent statement to MDR, Kultusminister Clemens (CDU) emphasized that religious education conveys specific values and perspectives, which remain significant despite the current challenges faced by the church. Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, Saxony will implement a joint Catholic and Protestant religious education program, following Niedersachsen’s lead, which has already introduced a new curriculum for Christian education. Additionally, the Diocese of Dresden-Meißen plans to trial a hybrid model combining self-study and video conferencing for Catholic religious instruction. Currently, approximately 3.5% of Saxony’s population identifies as Catholic, while nationwide, about half of students in grades 1 to 10 participate in religious education, a subject protected by the German Constitution.
