Arrests of Alleged Chinese Spies in Munich
A couple has been arrested in Munich on suspicion of espionage for China, targeting German academic researchers.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office reported that the suspects, both German citizens, established contacts with numerous scientists at German universities and research institutions, particularly in aerospace engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. They allegedly posed as interpreters or employees of an automotive manufacturer, luring some researchers to China under the pretext of giving lectures to civilian audiences, which were actually attended by personnel from state defense companies. Concurrently, the Bavarian State Criminal Police searched the suspects’ residences and workplaces, and ten additional contacts across several German states were investigated as potential witnesses. The case is being conducted in close collaboration with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
