German Coalition Agrees to Cuts in Integration Course Funding

The German government has reached an agreement to reduce funding for integration courses, limiting expenditures to €600 million annually.

Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt announced that previous costs, which had risen to €1.3 billion, will be significantly curtailed. Asylum seekers and individuals with tolerated status will no longer have a general entitlement to state-funded courses, which previously offered up to 700 hours of instruction aimed at achieving B1 language proficiency and deeper knowledge of legal systems. Instead, the government will enhance shorter initial orientation courses that provide basic German language skills and practical assistance for daily life in Germany, with exceptions made for Ukrainian nationals. The new regulations are set to take effect on June 1, 2026.
