Bundesrat Approves Reform of Private Pension System: Introduction of Standard Product
The Bundesrat has approved a reform of the private pension system, replacing the Riester pension with a new standard product requirement for private providers.
Under the new framework, private providers must offer a standard product with capped costs at one percent of the average annual return. While the previous guarantee of returning at least the contributed amount is removed for new investment options, a guaranteed depot remains available, allowing customers to choose between full capital protection or an 80 percent guarantee with higher risk potential. The state will provide financial incentives, contributing 50 cents for every euro deposited up to 360 euros annually, and 25 cents for amounts up to 1,800 euros, with additional allowances for families. Self-employed individuals will also be eligible for state support.
