Reduction in Employment Gap for STEM Professions, Yet Risks Remain

The employment gap in STEM fields has decreased by nearly 16% since March 2025, according to the IW Report from the Institute of the German Economy in Cologne.

As of March 2026, approximately 134,000 positions in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology remain unfilled due to a lack of suitably qualified candidates. Despite this improvement, the IW warns of significant risks to prosperity and competitiveness stemming from a persistent skills shortage in these sectors. The report emphasizes the importance of leveraging the potential of women, older individuals, and immigrants to mitigate these challenges. The MINT Report is produced by the IW on behalf of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations, the Gesamtmetall Employers’ Association, and the National Initiative “MINT Zukunft schaffen!”.
